Periodontal disease results in the loss of bone around your teeth. As bone is lost, the tissue or gums follow the architecture of the bone resulting in recession. Recession can cause teeth to appear long, and revealed root surfaces can be very sensitive. Untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and has been associated with systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Early diagnosis is paramount to control periodontal disease. At Serenity Smiles, our records include periodontal charting which will be checked at every exam. Charting is done by gently measuring the natural space that exists between your tooth and your tissue or gums. There is a natural space called the sulcus which in health is 1-3 mm. A toothbrush, when used properly can reach 3 mm underneath the tissue and clean these sulcus spaces.
In periodontal disease, bone loss allows plaque and tartar to build underneath the gums deeper than a toothbrush can clean. The accumulation of bacteria causes further bone loss in a vicious cycle. At Serenity Smiles we are proud to offer periodontal therapy also known as scaling and root planing or a deep cleaning. We anesthetize your tissues for your comfort as ultrasonic instruments and hand instruments clean the bacteria underneath your gums. With the bacteria removed, your gum tissues can began to recover.
Bone loss is irreversible, but caught early, we can maintain your bone levels and improve your oral health. Regular screenings are part of your regular checkup at Serenity Smiles at no additional cost.
